Co-founder and CEO, Frederick “Suizo” Mendler delivered an eye-opening presentation on the importance of low-latency performance-based assessments (PBA) at the Performance Testing Council’s 40th Summit held in San Antonio, Texas February 21-22, 2018.
The presentation titled, “Overcoming Common Obstacles for Computer-based PBA for Financial and Stats Industries,” referenced key statistical findings based on a global study TrueAbility conducted on PBA and network latency that found organizations must consider both the physical location of the end user and the hosted exam environment to overcome the negative effects of high-latency obstacles when administering exams. In addition to addressing several PBA challenges, the presentation focused on means to solve latency issues, perhaps the most critical potential obstacle to successful performance-based assessment delivery. TrueAbility pinpointed the acceptable range of latency in order for a candidate to have a successful experience no matter their region of the world and built a global infrastructure to guarantee it. Latency impacts the end-user experience with lag and on-screen delay. When a test-taker experiences lag and on-screen delay (when the test taker clicks a button or moves a mouse, and it takes a few seconds to register) it causes one of the top hindrances in achieving desired validity and fidelity during a PBA assessment exam.
Esteemed research doctor, Richard Satava, MD, FACS, Professor Emeritus of Surgery at University of Washington Medical Center, well-known for his research and advances in robotic surgery, was in attendance. He validated the analysis by stating, “the results from my research also confirmed the same acceptable range of latency for doctors using robotics in surgery whether on-site or remotely.”
Rapid advances in assessment technology continue to revolutionize skill assessment in all industries. Evolving end-user expectations and a changing landscape are opening doors to disruptive innovation. Testing and certification organizations such as financial and statistics who desire to stay relevant, require a modern solution to leapfrog from paper, pencil, and calculators to a high-fidelity assessment using a live testing environment and action-based learning.
Performance-based assessment is a method that presents incredible opportunities for certification and training organizations around the world. The simple fact is the art and science of skills testing has traditionally focused on archaic methods. Automating the exam process is a chance to enhance the user experience, boost credibility, significantly reduce costs, improve exam delivery, and increase fidelity with more accurate results when delivered without interruption.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
